You cannot create books of the quality that publishers produce with ManualWorks. However, if you understand the common components that most books have, you can create books of reasonable quality with little time. This chapter describes the structure of a book built from chapters.1
A book consists of several chapters. They can be divided into front matter, text, and back matter. The kind and number of chapters in each part depend on the nature of the book. For example, technical books and manuals have more chapters in the front matter and back matter than novels or essays.
When you open a PDF or printed book, the right page(recto) is an odd page, and the left page(verso) is an even page. In many cases, a chapter starts on a right page, and a blank page is sometimes inserted before it for this purpose.
Front Matter
The front matter is the content that comes before the text of a book. It consists of the half title page, title page, dedication, table of contents, foreword, preface, acknowledgments, and so on.
The main components of the front matter are as follows.
Title
Table of contents
List of figures
List of tables
List of code listings
Foreword
Preface
Acknowledgments2
We recommend that you arrange the front matter in the order listed above.
Except for the table of contents, list of figures, list of tables, and list of code listings, which are generated automatically, you must enter the content yourself. When you create a chapter, select the chapter type as follows: “Title” for the title, “Table of Contents” for the table of contents, “List of Figures” for the list of figures, “List of Tables” for the list of tables, “List of Codes” for the list of code listings, “Foreword” for the foreword, “Preface” for the preface, and “Acknowledgments” for the acknowledgments. For everything else, select “Front Matter Chapter”.
Title Chapter
Unlike other chapters, which consist mainly of text paragraphs, the title chapter consists of pages that each have a specific function. The main pages are as follows.
One or two endpapers are placed between the cover of the book and the first page. Endpapers are not included when page numbers are counted.
- First page(i)—Half title page
A page before the title page that shows a short title, series title, anthology title, and so on. It usually shows only a short title, without the author name or publication details.
- Second page(ii)—Series title, frontispiece, or blank page
A page with the series title (the title of the series that the book belongs to) or an illustration, or a blank page.
- Third page(iii)—Title page
The title page of the book, which consists of the book title, subtitle, author name, publisher information, and so on.
- Fourth page(iv)—Copyright page
A page with various copyright information.
- Fifth page(v)—Dedication
A page on which the author or publisher pays tribute through the book to benefactors, sponsors, mentors, friends, and others.
- Sixth page(vi)—Epigraph
A page with a quotation that expresses the purpose or ideas of the book. If there is no dedication, it is placed on the fifth page.
Set up the pages that make up the title with PDF Page Layouts or Creating Design Pages.
The front matter has the following characteristics.
Pages are numbered with Roman numerals(i, ii, iii…).
Chapters and sections are not numbered.
Text
The text, which makes up most of the book, consists of several chapters.
Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5
In some cases, several chapters are grouped into a part. For details, see Creating Parts.
The text has the following characteristics.
Pages are numbered with Arabic numerals(1, 2, 3…).
Parts, chapters, and sections are numbered.
Back Matter
The back matter comes after the text. It is not required, but it consists of components that supplement the text and help readers understand it.
The main components of the back matter are as follows.
Appendix
Chronology
Abbreviations
Glossary
Bibliography or references
List of contributors
Index
Colophon
We recommend that you arrange the back matter in the order listed above.
Except for the index, which is generated automatically, you must enter the content yourself. For the glossary and abbreviations, you can insert the content registered in Glossaries and Abbreviation Lists as object paragraphs. When you create a chapter, select the chapter type as follows: “Appendix” for the appendix, “Glossary” for the glossary, “Abbreviation” for the abbreviations, and “Index” for the index. For everything else, select “Back Matter Chapter”.
The back matter has the following characteristics.
Page numbering continues from the text.
Pages are numbered with Arabic numerals(1, 2, 3…).
In appendixes, chapters and sections are numbered in a separate way.
Except for appendixes, chapters and sections are not numbered.
- The structure and terms are based on The Chicago Manual of Style and the Korean Dictionary of Library and Information Science Terms.
- You can also include them in the preface instead of making a separate chapter.
