Creating MS Word Files

Supported MS Word Versions

Exported files open only in MS Word 2010 or later.

Creating a Theme for MS Word

MS Word files use the same themes as PDF files. However, the values set in the default PDF theme do not suit MS Word. We recommend that you create a theme for MS Word by following these steps.

  1. Go to the <Style | Theme> menu and create a new theme. Select PDF as the type.

  2. In the <General> menu, change the line height to 1em and save.

  3. In the <Figure> menu, change the following and save.

    • Change the caption side to bottom.

    • In Paragraph, change After to 0.

    • In Paragraph of the figure caption, change Before to 0.5em and After to 2em.

  4. In the <Table> menu, change the following and save.

    • Change the caption side to bottom.

    • In Paragraph of the table, change Before to 2em and After to 0.

    • In Paragraph of the table caption, change Before to 0.5em and After to 2em.

No separate styles are created for page breaks, blank pages, spaces, horizontal lines, subscripts, and superscripts.

Fonts

Unlike PDF files, MS Word files do not include fonts by default. Therefore, fonts are determined by language, regardless of the theme settings.

However, the following use the Consolas font regardless of language.

Notes, Tips, and Cautions

Background images are not supported. Instead, “Note”, “Tip”, and “Caution” paragraphs are distinguished by text labels.

Steps

Steps are distinguished by the word “Step” in front of them. Indenting the paragraphs that follow a step paragraph is not supported.

Callouts

Callout numbers from 1 to 10 use the circled numbers in the Wingdings font. Because the Wingdings font does not support other circled characters, the other numbers are only shown in bold.

Space Object Paragraphs

Empty paragraphs are inserted. Their number is the height divided by 15.

Precautions

Importing Created Word Files

When you import an MS Word file created with ManualWorks, it cannot be imported as is because the document format is different.

Title Page

No settings like those of PDF page layouts are provided. You cannot create a custom title page; only the default title page is provided.

A title page is created only when there is a chapter of the title type.

Table of Contents

Note the following about the table of contents.
