Reusing Content

When you write many documents, some content repeats. ManualWorks provides several ways to manage this repeated content effectively.

Referencing Chapters

Use this feature when you want to reuse an entire chapter. You can reuse a repeated chapter in multiple documents by copying its content or by referencing it. For details, see Importing Chapters from Other Documents.

Including Other Paragraphs

Creating an Object Paragraph That Includes Other Paragraphs

Follow these steps to create an object paragraph that includes other paragraphs.

  1. Open the chapter that will include other paragraphs in the editor.

  2. At the position where you want to include other paragraphs, click the <Object Paragraphselect_check_box> icon to add a paragraph.

  3. In 1Object Type, select “Include Other Elements.”

  1. Click the <2Choose elements to include.> link to open an overlay where you can select paragraphs.

  2. Select the paragraphs to include, and then click .

With the 3“Heading Adjustment” option, you can raise or lower the level of heading paragraphs by up to two levels, relative to where they are included in the document.

You can select paragraphs from other documents only in documents you have access permissions for.

Including by Chapter, Section, or Paragraph

When you include other paragraphs, you can select them by chapter, section, or paragraph. To include an entire chapter, select “1Select all elements.”

To include individual paragraphs, select each paragraph to include. You can select multiple paragraphs together. To include a section, select the section's “2heading paragraph.” In the “Select all elements in the section under the heading.” confirmation dialog, click OK to include the entire section, or click Cancel to include only the heading paragraph.

Parameter Substitution

Parameters are substituted only in paragraphs included in other chapters and in chapters imported by chapter reference. If you set parameters for the document, parameters are substituted in all paragraphs.

To use parameter substitution, write the following.

See 1${title}.

In the web viewer, PDF, EPUB, and other outputs, 1 is replaced with the book title.

You can use the following parameter names.

Parameter Names

Variable

Description

title

Book title

subtitle

Book subtitle

edition

Book edition

author

Book author

Chapter title

chapter_subtitle

Chapter subtitle

chapter_author

Chapter author

If you add parameters to the document with the <Set Parameter> link in “Basics” on the document details screen, you can also use the names you added as parameters.

To prevent parameter substitution, write the following.

See \${title}.

In Korean text, particle pairs such as 은/는, 이/가, and 을/를 are handled automatically.

Referencing Image Paragraphs

When you reference an image paragraph with Include Other Elements, you cannot set a different image title. To reference an image and set a different title, reference the image with “Importing from Other Document” in the <Image Paragraphimage>.

Keeping Chapter and Paragraph Addresses When Referencing Other Chapters or Including Other Paragraphs

By default, the UUID of the referencing chapter or paragraph is prefixed to the address of the referenced chapter or paragraph. If you select the 1“Preserve UUID when including other elements.” option, the address of the referenced chapter or paragraph is used as is.

If you select this option and include the same chapter or paragraph more than once in a document, conflicts can occur. Use it at your own risk.
